What concrete is made of
The National Park Service says concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel, crushed stone or other coarse material, bound together with lime or cement. It says the mix goes through a chemical reaction and hardens when water is added.
The U.S. Geological Survey says cement, once it is mixed with water, is what binds concrete together.
We fit concrete in kitchens, on islands and on bathroom vanity tops.
Curing takes time
The Park Service says new concrete gains strength through curing, the time after it is poured. It says that to avoid problems from curing concrete too fast, such as cracks on the surface, it is important to use proper curing methods and to allow enough time.
On any concrete top we fit, we tell you before we start when the top will be ready to go in.
Hairline cracks
The National Park Service says cracking occurs in most concrete. It says some cracks, such as those from the concrete shrinking as it cures, are not a structural concern, but if they are left unrepaired, they can let moisture in. It also says hairline cracks that show no sign of getting bigger can often be left alone.
Concrete and silica dust
OSHA says concrete contains crystalline silica, and that very small silica particles, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand, are made when concrete is cut, sawed, ground or drilled.
Whoever you hire, ask where your top will be cut and how they keep the dust down.
What sets the price of concrete
We price concrete countertops for your house once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price depends on the color and finish you choose, how thick the top is, how much counter we cover, the edge you pick, and how many holes we cut for the sink and the cooktop, the burners set into the counter.
Not sure concrete is right for you? We can quote more than one material. We also fit quartz, granite, soapstone and butcher block.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The color, finish and thickness of the top.
- Whether the top is poured in your kitchen or made somewhere else and brought in.
- A drawing of the layout, with every seam and cutout marked.
- Which edge you are getting.
- Whether taking out and hauling away the old countertops is in the price.
- Who disconnects and reconnects the sink, faucet and cooktop.
Questions about concrete countertops in Thornton
Do I need a permit for new concrete countertops in Thornton?
Not for the countertops themselves. The City of Thornton lists replacing cabinets and counter tops among the inside projects that don't need a building permit. Plumbing, electrical or structural modifications do need one. If your new concrete top means moving the sink, we'll check with the city's building division with you before we start.
How do I clean concrete countertops?
FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they've held raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs. It also says never to thaw or marinate food on the counter.
Can I use strong cleaners to get a stain out?
The National Park Service says cleaners with strong acids damage concrete and are harmful to people, and should not be used. It says detergent cleaners or mild, diluted acid cleaners may work on stains.
Is concrete the same as quartz?
No. NIOSH says engineered stone is also known as quartz, while the National Park Service describes concrete as sand, gravel or crushed stone bound together with cement. If you want engineered stone instead, we fit quartz countertops too.
Can you replace my old laminate with concrete?
Yes, we can take out old laminate or tile tops and fit concrete in their place as part of a countertop replacement job.
Can you put in a backsplash at the same time?
Yes, we can. Once the concrete is set, we do backsplash installation, facing the strip of wall just above the counter with tile or stone that goes with it.
Can you fix a chip in a concrete countertop?
Send us a photo, or we can come out and look. We'll tell you whether a countertop repair will hold or the piece should be replaced.
